How We Began
Flamenco Sin Fronteras was born from a belief that flamenco is relevant and deeply connected to the cultures of Asia. From our earliest days in 2009 as an informal group of five dancers under the tutelage of flamenco maestro Antonio Vargas, we have pushed the boundaries of the artform, presenting flamenco in bold new ways: dance‑theatre adaptations of poets and playwrights, fusions with diverse musical traditions, and contemporary, cutting‑edge creations that speak to life in a modern, multicultural Singapore.
Our inaugural production "THE HOUSE" in March 2013 was a novel adaptation of Garcia Lorca's famous play that transported the production to a Peranakan household, with a mix of actors, dancers and an original musical ensemble. It performed to rave reviews.
Since then, our many projects have included collaborations with both local and overseas artistes. They include Flamenco Cantata (collaboration of Singapore Youth Choir, Dr Robert Casteels, and flamenco masters Talegon de Cordoba, Carmen Talegona and Jorge Padilla); Chijmes Flamenco Festival, Vivocity Flamenco Festival, and our regular Singapore Flamenco Festival which over the years has not only brought acclaimed flamenco artists and productions to Singapore but also showcased our signature cross-cultural FlamencAsian productions, which highlight flamenco's eclectic mix of Indian, Arabic and Jewish origins and weave flamenco with uniquely Asian movement, music and storytelling.
We started as a small community. Community remains central to who we are. Using flamenco as a powerful tool for emotional expression, confidence‑building and movement therapy, we have been building long term relationships with communities and organisations to support social causes and outreach programs. Our annual La Fiesta production is a celebration of the communities and organisations that we work with, coming together to share dance, music, stories and song.
From that informal group of five students in 2009, we are now an established flamenco school with two studios in Singapore. Our community of students has grown over the years. Our students come from all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life, united by a shared love for flamenco.
Our journey is still unfolding. Each new chapter pushes us to exciting opportunities —artistically, culturally and socially. As we continue to create, collaborate and reimagine what we and flamenco can be in Singapore and the region, we want you to join us. The story is far from finished.
